You will need:
- dye
- fabric
- pots
- salt
- water
- tongs
- bath tub/sink
- kettle(optional if you have enough pots)
Before the fabric can be dyed, it needs to soak in a fixative. For this I used my sink and a kettle because I didn't have any more large pots. I used approximately 1/2 cup salt per 8 cups water. Depending on your equipment let fabric simmer/soak for one hour.
Step Two:
Place fabric in dye and let soak for at least twenty-four hours. I simmered both pots for an hour, but next time I will skip this. The red cabbage stayed blue, but once heated the beet dye turned brown.
Step Three:
Rinse out fabric in tub or sink.
Step Three:
Rinse out fabric in tub or sink.
Final Results:
The fabric didn't turn out as vibrant as I had imagined, but for the price I am willing to experiment further. Next time I will skip heating the beet dye and fabric to see if it holds more of a magenta colour.
Today I plan on getting more sewing done and cleaning up from fabric dying experiments!
And. . .I'll be enjoying the leaves because all of a sudden they are golden and falling off the trees. Hello autumn!
